First Things First…Within us lies a particular individual, completely unique in the details. Each step we take is a step into one singular future. Everything from owning a home, car, and clothes. From a job to an education, all of these are our own. It would appear that our world is of one person, with the rest of humanity merely inhabitants. This is obviously a very self-centered position, but it’s not unrealistic for this to be the case.
Now, I’m not saying this is a conscious way anyone lives their lives, but when we stop to really think about our behaviors and the goals we strive for, it seems as if this is how our brain tends to operate. It’s understandable, considering life, at it’s core, is about the struggle to stay alive.
Of course, this could just be my cynical perspective, but I’m sure most of us know those who would prefer to live in the dark when it relates to the struggles and goals of others around the world in order to, whether knowingly or unknowingly, preserve this idea of their own world. There’s nothing wrong with this, considering we all close ourselves off to the exposure of different ideas, viewpoints, and cultures to some extent.
Sometimes I like to imagine myself as one of the inhabitants of someone else’s world. I think it’s an important perspective to have at times to experience everything through the lens of another. Common Ground is my way of attempting this, and hopefully you will join me. I mean, when it comes to learning about those living inside their own worlds, stepping into their own futures, what do we have to lose?
